What do rifampin capsules do?
RIFAMPIN (Rifadin(R) or Rimactane(R)) is an antibacterial agent. It is effective as a treatment or a preventative against certain types of bacteria. Rifampin treats all forms of tuberculosis. For this purpose it is never used alone, but in combination with at least one other agent that treats tuberculosis. Rifampin also treats carriers of meningitis and for this purpose it is given alone. Generic rifampin capsules are available.
What should my health care professional know before I take rifampin?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
• an alcohol problem
• dental disease
• liver disease
• wear contact lens
• an unusual or allergic reaction to rifampin, rifamycin, other medicines, foods, dyes or preservatives
• pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• breast-feeding
How should I take this medicine?
Take rifampin capsules by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow capsules whole with a full glass of water. It is best to take rifampin on an empty stomach; 1 to 2 hours before food, or at least 2 hours after food. If rifampin upsets your stomach you can take it with food. Opening the capsule and mixing the contents with food, such as applesauce, is an easy way to give to children. Take your doses at regular intervals and try not to miss any doses. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better. Do not stop taking except on your prescriber's advice.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
What other medicines can interact with rifampin?
• alcohol
• beta blockers, often used for high blood pressure or heart problems
• chloramphenicol
• cyclosporine
• diazepam
• digoxin
• female hormones, including contraceptive or birth control pills
• hormones such as prednisone or cortisone
• isoniazid
• itraconazole or ketoconazole
• medicines for diabetes that are taken by mouth
• medicines for heart rhythm problems
• methadone
• theophylline
• warfarin
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What side effects may I notice from taking rifampin?
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
• blood in urine
• dark yellow or brown urine
• difficulty breathing
• dizziness
• fever or chills, sore throat
• headache
• loss of appetite
• muscle aches or pains
• reduced amount of urine passed
• stomach pain
• unusual tiredness or weakness
• yellowing of the eyes or skin
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
• diarrhea
• discoloration of soft contact lens
• nausea, vomiting
• reddish-orange to reddish-brown coloration of urine, stools, saliva, tears, and sweat
• skin rash, itching
