What does ezetimibe tablets do?
EZETIMIBE(Zetia(R)) is used either alone or with other cholesterol lowering drugs and a cholesterol-lowering diet, to help lower cholesterol in the blood. Reducing cholesterol helps prevent strokes and heart attacks. Ezetimibe works by reducing the amount of cholesterol your body absorbs from your diet.
What should my health care professional know before I take ezetimibe?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
• liver disease
• allergies
• pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• breast-feeding
How should I take this medicine?
Ezetimibe tablets are taken by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the capsules whole with a drink of water. Do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it a soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, consult your prescriber or health care professional. You may need to miss a dose or take a double dose, depending on your condition and treatment. Do not take double or extra doses without advice.
What other medicines can interact with ezetimibe?
Tell your prescriber or other health care professional about all other medicines you are taking including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check before stopping or starting any of your medications.
What side effects might I notice from taking ezetimibe?
Side effects that you should report to your doctor as soon as possible:
• unusual tiredness or fatigue
• muscle ache or joint pain
• yellowing of the eyes or skin
• chest pain
• flu-like symptoms (such as headache, sore throat, weakness, chills, or fever)
• dark urine or pale stools
• swelling of hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue
• nausea
• vomiting
• unusual bruising or bleeding
Rare or uncommon:
• rash, itching
• swelling
• severe dizziness
• difficulty breathing
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
• headache
• dizziness
• stuffy nose
• diarrhea
