What do terbinafine tablets do?
TERBINAFINE (Lamisil(R)) is a medication used to treat infections caused by certain types of fungus. It is most commonly used for skin and nail infections.
What should my health care professional know before I use terbinafine tablets?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
• frequently drink alcoholic beverages
• kidney disease
• liver disease (acute or chronic), including cirrhosis or hepatitis
• an unusual or allergic reaction to terbinafine, other medications, dyes, or preservatives
• pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• breast-feeding
How should I use this medicine?
Terbinafine tablets are taken by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. You can take the tablets with food. If terbinafine upsets your stomach it may help to take it with food. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not use your medicine more often than directed. Use your doses at regular intervals. Finish the full course prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better. Do not stop using except on your prescriber's advice.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.
What other medicines can interact with terbinafine?
• caffeine
• cimetidine
• cyclosporine
• medicines for depression including amitriptyline, impramine, or nortriptyline
• rifampin
• terfenadine
• theophylline
• warfarin
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What side effects may I notice from using terbinafine?
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
• dark yellow or brown urine
• fever or chills, cough, or sore throat
• loss of appetite
• nausea and vomiting
• redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
• skin rash, itching
• stomach or abdominal pain
• swelling, fluid retention
• unusual tiredness
• yellowing of skin or eyes
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
• headache
• changes in taste
• stomach upset
