What do Combivir(R) tablets do?
Combivir(R) is a combination of two antiviral drugs in one tablet. Combivir(R) can slow down the damage caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The amount of HIV virus in the blood is called "viral load." Combivir(R) can reduce the viral load, especially when combined with another anti-HIV drug. Combivir(R) will not cure or prevent HIV infection or AIDS.

What should my health care professional know before I take Combivir(R)?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
• dental problems
• kidney disease
• liver disease
• pancreatitis
• tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
• an unusual or allergic reaction to lamivudine, zidovudine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
• pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• breast-feeding

How should I take this medicine?
Take Combivir(R) tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. You can take Combivir(R) with or without food. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

It is very important that you take this medicine exactly as instructed by your prescriber or health care professional. Try not to miss any doses of Combivir(R). Also, do not stop taking this medicine unless you are told to stop by your prescriber or health care professional. Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

What other medicines can interact with Combivir(R)?
• atovaquone
• fluconazole
• interferon
• probenecid
• valproic acid
• zalcitabine, ddC

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including nonprescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from taking Combivir(R)?
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
• depression
• dizziness
• fever or chills, sore throat
• loss of appetite
• muscle pain or weakness
• nausea, vomiting
• pain, tingling, or numbness in the hands or feet
• shortness of breath
• unusual bleeding or bruising
• unusual tiredness or weakness

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
• change in nail color
• cough
• diarrhea
• difficulty sleeping
• headache
• runny or stuffy nose
• skin rash
• tiredness
• upset stomach
